The Acolyte’s Twin Concept Sputters In Its Debut

While The Acolyte is receiving positive reviews, comparable to Ahsoka but not quite reaching the acclaim of The Mandalorian and Andor, I found myself unimpressed with the central premise.

This isn't a spoiler, as a late TV spot and an interview with the star revealed this before the show premiered. Amandla Stenberg plays force-powered twins in the series. She explained to The Electric Playground:

“I play twins in the show. Their names are Osha and Mae, and they lean towards different sides of the Force. That’s kind of up for debate, and hopefully, there’ll be one once everybody gets to see the show. Mae is on a path for revenge – she’s on a warpath. Something that happened in their childhood separated these twins, and now Mae is out for revenge. Osha, a mechanic who used to be part of the Jedi Order but left as a Padawan, is accused of the revenge that’s taking place and has to defend herself while also discovering that her twin sister is still alive.”

I’m not impressed so far. The first two episodes didn't work well for me, and I'm uncertain about how the storyline will unfold, but I suppose I should give it more of a chance.

There are a few issues with the show. In the first episode, it attempts a "gotcha" moment by having Mae stalk and kill a Jedi (played by Carrie-Anne Moss, who hopefully appears in flashbacks so her role isn’t completely wasted). Then, in the next scene, we see a cheerful, non-threatening Osha, who is arrested for the crime. It quickly becomes apparent that her twin sister, whom she thought was dead, is actually alive and hunting Jedi. This opening feels like a cheap trick.
