Islam Makhachev has successfully defended his UFC lightweight title twice, with both victories coming against former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. UFC 302 marks Makhachev's first title defense against a "true" 155-pound contender.
Makhachev holds the record for the longest active winning streak in the UFC, with 13 consecutive victories. A win against Poirier would place Makhachev alongside Anderson Silva and Kamaru Usman as the only fighters to achieve 14 or more consecutive wins in UFC history. Poirier enters UFC 302 as the No. 4 ranked fighter in the UFC lightweight division.
