Pirates’ Paul Skenes hits triple digits 17 times, strikes out 7 in big league debut vs. Cubs

In his much-anticipated debut, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates lived up to the hype, showcasing an arsenal of pitches that left hitters in awe. His fastball blazed past the 100 mph mark an impressive 17 times, while his slider proved to be a baffling challenge for seasoned major leaguers. Adding to the intrigue was his unique "splinker," a fusion of splitter and sinker that danced unpredictably, setting him apart from his peers.

However, the 21-year-old phenom understands that raw talent alone won't secure success at the highest level. Amidst the excitement of his debut, Skenes remains focused on mastering control over his pitches. Despite notching seven strikeouts over four-plus innings and ultimately securing a 10-9 victory over the Chicago Cubs, he acknowledges there's room for improvement.

Skenes reflects on his performance, recognizing the inefficiency in his pitch count, needing 84 pitches to notch a mere 12 outs. While he showcased flashes of brilliance, he also issued a couple of walks, hit a batter, and conceded three runs. Aware of the scrutiny surrounding his workload, he aims for greater efficiency and precision in future outings, knowing that refining his command will be pivotal in his journey to sustained success in the majors.

Yes, there were moments of brilliance in front of a crowd of 34,924 that included his famous girlfriend, LSU gymnast and social media influencer Livvy Dunne.

The Cubs provided a stark reminder that despite his immense talent, Paul Skenes is still a rookie with less than two years of full-time pitching experience. Excelling at baseball's highest level requires more than simply pushing the limits of the radar gun.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton attributed Skenes' ups and downs to the natural nervous energy that comes with making a major league debut. While Skenes had been dominant in Triple-A Indianapolis, boasting a remarkable 0.99 ERA in seven starts prior to his call-up, he chose not to delve into specifics regarding his performance.

Acknowledging the challenges faced, Skenes admitted, "You can attribute it to various factors, but it wasn't as precise as I'd hoped." Despite this, he etched his name in Pirates history, becoming the first pitcher aged 21 or younger to tally at least seven strikeouts in a major league debut since Nick Maddox's impressive 11 strikeouts against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1907 — a remarkable feat achieved 95 years before Skenes' birth.
