Jalen Brunson returns from foot injury, sparks Knicks' Game 2 win over Pacers

In a stunning comeback reminiscent of Willis Reed's legendary Game 7 appearance in 1970, Jalen Brunson returned from a right foot injury to lead the New York Knicks to a 130-121 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night. Brunson's heroic performance, scoring 24 of his 29 points in the second half, propelled the Knicks to a commanding 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Despite missing the entire second quarter as the Pacers surged ahead to a double-digit lead, Brunson's return sparked a remarkable turnaround for the Knicks. While he narrowly missed out on joining elite company as the second player in NBA history to score 40 or more points in five consecutive playoff games, Brunson's contribution was instrumental in securing the crucial win.

Adding to the Knicks' resilience, OG Anunoby delivered a career playoff-high 28 points before exiting with a left hamstring injury in the third quarter. Despite facing adversity with multiple key players sidelined due to season-ending injuries, the Knicks showcased their determination and grit to overcome the odds and emerge victorious.

With Jalen Brunson back in action, the New York Knicks received significant contributions from his Villanova teammates once again. Donte DiVincenzo showcased his scoring prowess with 28 points, while Josh Hart displayed an impressive all-around game with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists, bolstering the efforts of the No. 2-seeded Knicks.

Despite a standout performance from Tyrese Haliburton, who bounced back from a poor Game 1 to tally 34 points, nine assists, and six rebounds for the Pacers, they faced adversity after head coach Rick Carlisle was ejected following two technical fouls.

As the series shifts to Indiana for Game 3 on Friday and Game 4 on Sunday, both teams look to capitalize on their strengths and make adjustments for the crucial matchups ahead. Former Knicks forward Obi Toppin contributed 20 points off the bench for the Pacers, highlighting the depth of their roster. However, Indiana struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 10-for-17 (59%), which proved costly in their efforts to secure a victory.

Knicks fans showered Pacers Hall of Famer Reggie Miller with jeers, recalling the intense playoff rivalry of the 1990s, as he called the game for TNT. The atmosphere at Madison Square Garden was electric, especially during a tense first half when Jalen Brunson was notably absent for the entire second quarter.

Despite Brunson's early contributions, including a crucial 3-pointer, the momentum shifted as Indiana mounted an 11-0 run to erase New York's lead. Tied once again at 36, the Pacers capitalized on Brunson's absence, outscoring the Knicks 37-27 in the second quarter to establish a commanding 73-63 advantage by halftime.

However, Brunson's return to the court during halftime ignited the crowd, prompting thunderous applause and chants of "MVP." With Indiana leading 79-70, the Knicks mounted a remarkable 14-0 run, fueled by Brunson's leadership and contributions, to surge ahead 84-79.

Unfortunately, New York suffered another setback as OG Anunoby sustained a hamstring injury while attempting a fast-break layup. Despite the adversity, Brunson guided the Knicks through the final stretch, delivering 14 points in the fourth quarter to secure the crucial victory.

During the first quarter, the Knicks paid homage to Willis Reed's iconic return to the court, a historic moment in NBA and Madison Square Garden history. Reed's No. 19 jersey, hanging in the rafters, was illuminated as Hall of Fame teammate Walt Frazier received a well-deserved ovation on the court, commemorating their legendary partnership.
