Atlanta Hawks win 2024 NBA Draft Lottery

Atlanta gets the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, with Washington, Houston, San Antonio and Detroit rounding out the top 5.

The Atlanta Hawks emerged victorious in the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery, sponsored by State Farm and held at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. Securing the coveted first overall pick, the Hawks are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming NBA Draft 2024, presented by State Farm.

Scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, with the first round at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., followed by the second round on Thursday, June 27, at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York, the draft promises to be a pivotal event for the league.

Here are the results from the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery:

  1. Atlanta
  2. Washington
  3. Houston
  4. San Antonio
  5. Detroit
  6. Charlotte
  7. Portland
  8. San Antonio
  9. Memphis
  10. Utah
  11. Chicago
  12. Oklahoma City
  13. Sacramento
  14. Portland

Despite entering with just a 3% chance, the Hawks defied the odds, clinching the top spot after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 36-46 record. Despite a late-season stumble, losing their final six regular-season games and bowing out to the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the So-Fi Play-In Tournament, the Hawks found themselves celebrating their lottery win.

General Manager Landry Fields expressed his surprise and excitement at the outcome, stating, “It was a shock. When I first saw that it wasn’t us between 10 and 12, that launched us into the top four. I was like, all right, we’ve got a real shot at this thing. A bit of surprise, but a lot of excitement.”

With the No. 1 pick in hand, the Hawks now have a valuable asset to shape their future. While the top selection remains uncertain, with no clear favorite akin to last year's choice of Victor Wembanyama for San Antonio, the Hawks are positioned to make a significant impact.

Washington and Detroit had the highest odds of securing the top pick at 14%. Only a handful of teams have clinched the lottery with slimmer odds than Atlanta, with Orlando's 1.52% chance in 1993 standing out as the most improbable. The Magic made history that year with a blockbuster trade, exchanging the rights to Chris Webber for Penny Hardaway along with three future first-round picks.

San Antonio, having landed Wembanyama in the previous year's draft, is a testament to the transformative power of the first overall pick. With a history of selecting iconic players like David Robinson and Tim Duncan, the Spurs added another gem to their roster, and Wembanyama delivered an exceptional rookie season, cementing his status as one of the league's brightest talents.
